A family kitchen on Barrington Street
YiLan opened in July 2023 as Halifax's first Chinese halal restaurant. Owner Zahra Yang came to Halifax from China in 2008 to study electrical engineering at Dalhousie and spent eight years in tech before opening a restaurant of her own.
In the kitchen are her husband's family, who ran a halal Chinese restaurant in China for twenty years. They cook in the Hui and Xinjiang styles of northwest China: noodles pulled by hand, dumplings and buns made in house, all with locally sourced halal meat.
